Solan MC visits Coimbatore for better governance

Various innovative approaches to urban governance implemented by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation would be adopted by the Solan civic body. A delegation of elected representatives and officials from the Municipal Corporation Solan, including Mayor Usha Sharma, Deputy Mayor Meera Anand, Councillors, Commissioner Ekta Kapta and Assistant Engineers (AEs) Gopi Singh and Alpana Thakur, who visited the Coimbatore city last week, have gained a versatile insight into these aspects.

The delegation was acquainted with best practices in sanitation, infrastructure development as well as municipal administration. During the visit, the delegation interacted with their counterparts from Coimbatore and shared experiences on various aspects of urban governance.

They focused on various civic issues like providing round-the-clock efficient and uninterrupted water management systems, underground modern drainage systems to reduce flooding and improve sanitation, integrated command and control center for enhanced municipal services and emergency response among other key issued said MC Commissioner Ekta Kapta.

The delegation was also made aware about innovative strategies for revenue generation, including public-private partnerships as the civic body had been severely cash-strapped with few financial avenues promising regular returns. Sustainable urban planning practices by balancing growth with environmental as well as social considerations was also pondered upon during the visit.

Other key areas like setting up micro composting unit to decentralise waste management and production of nutrient-rich compost. Material recovery facility encompassing segregation and processing of recyclable materials was also studied in the tour.

The Municipal Corporation Solan plans to implement various initiatives in the near future like upgrading water supply infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted supply besides underground draining system to reduce flooding and improve sanitation, establishing a centralised control centre for enhanced municipal services and emergency response. Other smart waste management plans like decentralised waste management systems, including micro composting units and material recovery facilities, wioll be implemented. Besides, initiatives like adopting sustainable urban planning practices to balance growth with environmental and social considerations were also studied.

“This exposure visit has been an enriching experience for us. We look forward to implementing the best practices we have learned here,” said Mayor Usha Sharma. “The visit has provided us with valuable insights into innovative approaches to urban governance. We are committed to applying these lessons in Solan,” added the MC Commissioner.
