Congress has fielded its Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi for a straight third time

Congress party on Saturday released its fourth list of 46 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections featuring some big names like former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and Karti Chidambaram.

The party has fielded its Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi for a straight third time.

For Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress is in alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP) and is contesting 17 seats, the party announced candidates for nine seats. These include Danish Ali from Amroha, Imran Masood from Saharanpur and Alok Mishra from Kanpur. Ali joined the party on Wednesday.

Congress, however, has maintained suspense over the all-important Amethi and Rae Bareli seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Other names in the list include newly-inducted leader Lal Singh from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur, Karti Chidambaram from Sivaganga, Manickam Tagore from Virudhnagar and S Jothimani from Karur.

Congress had, on March 21, released its third list of 57 candidates fielding Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Berhampore, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna from Gulbarga and former Union minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s daughter Praniti Shinde from Solapur.

In its third list, the party had declared candidates for two seats in Arunachal Pradesh, 11 in Gujarat, 17 in Karnataka, seven in Maharashtra, five in Rajasthan, five in Telangana, eight in West Bengal and one in Puducherry.

The candidature of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Berhampore set up the much-anticipated clash between the veteran Congress leader and cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan, who has been fielded by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal.
