Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today said that the government had adopted a zero tolerance policy against the drug menace in the state to protect the youth from falling prey to drug peddlers.
Sukhu, while addressing students during the annual function of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Government Degree College here, announced that MBA and MCA along with postgraduate courses in history and political science would be started in the college from the next academic session. He said that funds would be provided for the maintenance of the synthetic track and the construction of a girls’ hostel for 100 students in the college.
Sukhu said that a Rajiv Gandhi day boarding co-educational school would be established in every constituency of the district. He added that Rajiv Gandhi day boarding schools in Nadaun and Bhoranj would commence functioning from next year and such schools would be opened in every Assembly constituency of the state.
On the drug eradication front, he said that a statewide anti-drug campaign was launched two months ago and drug trafficking had reduced by over 25 per cent. He added that a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs had been adopted and stringent punishment to the drug mafia was being ensured.
The Chief Minister said that the previous BJP government had disbursed Rs 5,000 crore worth of freebees for political gains. He added that the state’s resources were not meant to serve one section of society.
He accused the previous BJP government of opening new educational institutions without making a budgetary provision and transferring teachers from existing schools, thus resulting in the degradation of the educational standards and the learning experiences of students. He said that a unified Directorate of Education for classes from pre-nursery to Class XII would be established soon in the state.
Sukhu said that the government was working to improve healthcare services by introducing high-end technology in public health institutions. He added that Rs 85 crore had been allocated for the establishment of a cancer hospital in Hamirpur.
Earlier, the Chief Minister felicitated students, who had excelled in various fields, and paid tributes to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Pramod Patial, principal of the college, read out the annual report of the college.
